Boosting Competitiveness of Railway Sector to Increase the Green Mobility and Reach Solid Socio-Economic Convergence
The European Commission aims to enhance the competitiveness of Poland’s railway sector through the implementation of BIM methodology, providing technical support and capacity building. This support included sharing good practices and conducting knowledge-sharing workshops. Expected results include improved project efficiency, increased adoption of BIM, and consequently, enhanced railway infrastructure quality.
Context
The project aims to enhance the competitiveness of Poland's railway sector by integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM), a key enabler for the country's digital transformation. This initiative aligns with the European Union's Fit for 55, Renovation Wave, and Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, which emphasise the role of digitalisation in creating safer, more efficient, and sustainable mobility systems. By addressing Poland's sporadic use of BIM and the absence of market-wide solutions, the project seeks to improve productivity and efficiency in the railway sector, supporting the objectives of the Polish Recovery and Resilience Plan and the EU's strategy for sustainable construction competitiveness.
Support delivered
The project supported CPK in advancing BIM adoption in Poland’s railway sector. Starting in the beginning of 2023, activities included an "AS-IS" analysis, workshops with Rail Baltica, Cross Rail International, Deutschebahn DB Netz, and on integrated project teams. Additionally, good practices and lessons learned in BIM implementation from daily railway operations where gathered, and a an extensive video training was produced. A communication plan and recommendations for BIM contract templates were also developed. The project was finalized with a final conference on June 24, 2024.
Results achieved
The project increased awareness and capacity-building for CPK and its stakeholders in the Polish railway sector. It strengthened knowledge transfer and collaboration with infrastructure managers from other countries. The production of 15 video training sessions, execution of virtual workshops with three international stakeholders, and analysis of five EU infrastructural projects for BIM contracts have collectively enhanced the competency of the sector. These efforts are expected to improve rail infrastructure development, streamline project management, and promote the adoption of modern BIM practices, leading to long-term efficiency gains in the sector’s digital and sustainable transformation.
