Policy Options for a Belgian Sustainable Finance Strategy
The Commission supported the Belgian federal authorities in the development of policy options for a Sustainable Finance Strategy, in order to enable the financial sector to play a role in financing the transition, through the mobilisation of capital to deliver on the goals of the European Green Deal.
Context
Recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the transition to climate neutrality, require massive investment efforts. Sustainable finance has a key role to play in meeting the policy objectives of the European Green Deal, as well as the EU’s international commitments on climate and sustainability objectives. In this context, Member States play a crucial role in guiding the financial sector to move towards a sustainable economy.
Support Delivered
The project led to an overview of policy options for the federal government to support financial market participants and build capacity within the government to enhance sustainable finance efforts. The recommendations developed by the support provider focused on increasing sustainable investments by integrating sustainable finance into policy frameworks and governance structures, improving sustainability-related disclosure, monitoring, and reporting, as well as capacity building.
Result achieved
The project contributed to identifying policy actions, including proposed timelines and responsibilities, relevant for financial market participants and the federal government as an investor. This work formed the knowledge base for the Belgian federal authorities to work towards developing a national Sustainable Finance Strategy.
