Capacity Building for Wildfire Prevention and Risk Assessment
The European Commission is supporting the authorities in Czech Republic, Saxony (Germany) and Slovenia to improve wildfire risk management, notably by integrating wildfire risk considerations in wildfire management systems.
Context
Wildfires are becoming increasingly more frequent and severe across Europe, driven by climate change, land-use patterns, and socio-economic factors. The severe wildfire season of 2022 emphasised the need to strengthen prevention, preparedness, and response mechanisms in several regions, including the Czech Republic, Saxony (Germany), and Slovenia.
Support delivered
During a 24-month implementation period, the project will deliver the following support:
1. Review the current wildfire risk management practices and assessment of gaps at each stage of the wildfire risk management cycle, following the Wildfire Peer Review Assessment Framework (PRAF).
2. Propose recommendations to enhance wildfire risk management, based on the identified shortcomings, opportunities for improvement, and international good practices.
3. Develop methodologies for wildfire risk assessment and test them in pilot areas.
4. Communication and awareness-raising activities.
5. Delivery of a training programme aimed at raising the skills of the public administration on wildfire risk management approaches.
Expected results
The technical support is expected to contribute to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of Czech Republic, Saxony (Germany) and Slovenia in relation to wildfires.
