Support to the Implementation of the Just Transition in the Czech Republic
The Commission supports the implementation of the Just Transition Fund (JTF) in three Czech regions: Moravia-Silesia, Ústí nad Labem and Karlovy Vary. It focusses on support to small project developers such as municipalities, SMEs or NGOs, in order to help with the deployment of the JTF in these regions.
Context
As part of the European Green Deal, the Just Transition Mechanism was set up to leave no person and no region behind in the transition towards a climate-neutral economy. It includes the Just Transition Fund (JTF) which invests in the regions most affected by the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
In the Czech Republic, three regions were identified as eligible under the JTF: the Moravian-Silesian region, Ústí nad Labem and Karlovy Vary. The economies of these three regions are heavily based on coal mining and energy-intensive industries, therefore there is a strong need for economic diversification and reskilling. In order to fully benefit from the JTF, there are still challenges, in particular on project preparation from small actors such as municipalities, SMEs and NGOs.
Support delivered
The support focused on targeted support to small project developers, including recommendations, trainings, dissemination of good practices, as well as recommendations for the development of a regional development and innovation agency in the Karlovy Vary and Ústí regions.
Results achieved
The results of the project include:
- A handbook of 35 good practices for the Just Transition;
- Trainings for close to 700 people;
- Targeted and concrete recommendations, including on the transfer of good practices on regional development and innovation from Moravia-Silesia to the Karlovy Vary and Ústí regions
