Sustainable development is a core principle of the Treaty on European Union and a priority objective for the Union’s internal and external policies. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being mainstreamed in all EU policies and tools (e.g. Impact Assessments and evaluations). SDGs 16 and 17 are enabling Goals with targets on improving the quality of public institutions (Target 16.6) and on governance, with Target 17.14 on creating mechanisms for Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development (PCSD) as a priority.
PCSD is an approach for governance (how and who?) to support policies (what and when?). It demonstrates that policy and governance are two sides of the same coin and should be addressed at the same time and with the same ambition. This session takes stock of the challenges and achievements of EU Member States on institutionalising PCSD.
